Tiger Subspecies

According to Sriyanie Miththapala (2000), there are seven recognized subspecies of tiger. The Caspian, Javan and Bali tigers are now extinct. All remaining subspecies of tiger are severely threatened. These include the Bengal, Chinese, Amur (Siberian), and Sumatran tigers. The Chinese tiger seems to be the common ancestor of all tiger subspecies (p. 100). The Amur is the largest of all cats. It would be a shame to lose any more species of tigers.
